reduction of prim. air vs closing damper.

When my pilot would not work I plugged up the port and tried to =
reduce by closing down the primary air to get a lazy yellow flame with =
full pressure and closed damper. It was the worst reduction ever. Why =
is this a poorer way to reduce than closing down the damper? Should =
this kind of reduction work just as well as damper closure? I go lots =
of carbon at the leak points near the door.=20

I'd recommend reading Nils Lou's book, The Art of Firing, for an excellent
discussion on reduction. Another good discussion about gas/air mixing is
done by Pete Pinnell in March/April 2000 Clay Times, Page 15 ,"Taking a
Shine To Shinos." Either of these sources will answer your question.
