Say, Richard;

Had that problem in school, and it still continues 43 years later.
While investigating Cobalt greens, my wife-to-be developed a glaze called
"Bev's Smile". Since then, we have seen that recipe everywhere in the US &
Canada, the same recipe, usually called "Smile". Hey, would it have hurt to
keep the provenance? Hadn't used it for twentyfive years because so many
use it.....finally did this Holiday season......love that Cobalt green!
Hell wid 'em! You go Richard. And here's another nickle in the pot from

Has anyone among you ever said, "Well, I snagged a couple
of good recipes that were posted from So-and-So's book,
so now I don't have to buy it anymore"? (If you said
"Yes" to this, were you really likely to have bought the
book before?) I think it's more probable that such recipe
exposure leads many previously undecided people toward
actual purchase of the book.

It seems to me that posting an occasional recipe, properly
credited whenever possible, does no great harm. If anything,
it generates interest in the original source, and probably
leads to more book sales than would have occurred otherwise.
Furthermore, the additional information which flows in the
ensuing discussion is surely beneficial for all.

How many sales of Val Cushing's book have been provoked
by our discussions of various VC recipes? How many would
have been sold without such discussion? More? I doubt it.

Certainly the widespread copying and distribution of
significant sections of any book is unacceptable; that's
why we don't post articles from magazines here, either.
Small excerpts, however, function more in the manner of
movie trailers and reviews. It's up to each of us to use
a little discretion in posting published information.

Total prohibition of such postings is a bit too extreme,
but surely we can discuss elements of published material,
accompanied by the relevant excerpts, without devaluing
the original source.

To Lee Love:
You sir imply that my efforts to discuss technical matters on
Clayart are for personal gain only....eg, I wish to write a book and sell
it.
Your views are harsh to say the least but quite in keeping with
the nature of Clayart.
Tell me, sir: Why should my chemical engineering training enhanced
by years of communication skill be freely donated to Clayart. Where is my
obligation? Why should I not expect my intellectual efforts be rewarded in
some small manner? If I post solely to Clayart I can expect a few nice
words and a pat on the back. and Harsh Words from some.
I do not wish to name-call. But I do resent being labelled
unworthy of my engineering vocation.
and FYI, I will write/post another item to Clayart to further
expand on this post of yours.
Sincerely, Tom Buck

Dear Tom Buck,

I, for one, appreciate your dilemma relating to original ideas, no =
matter what the prompt which brings such creative notions to mind.

When I consider that an idea I wish to share with our clayart colleagues =
may have further value as part of an article for publication I state in =
the beginning that I regard my words as being subject to the =
international rules of copyright. Now I feel a bit stupid when I do =
this. But if it is a New Idea (and despite opinions to the contrary =
there are a lot out there awaiting discovery) I want to be acknowledged =
as the one who initiated that event when it is reused. and I want to be =
sure no one can gainsay me in the event of an argument.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.=20

Lee Love, Tom Buck, List

I was just wandering through some old posts and came across the thread
Tom B got going inadvertently. Tom was very generous last year in
helping us with some clay/glaze problems, picking up on a problem I
had posted and volunteering help off-line. Before I posted some of
his information, I asked him if it was OK to post because I thought it
might be of general interest.

There has been a trend in several of the magazines, most notably Clay
Times and Pottery Making Illustrated, by either the magazine's editors
or other writers, of picking up information off ClayArt and using it
either more or less verbatim or as the basis for, articles.

Tom has every right and, because of the above questionably ethical
practice, of being leery of posting information to this list. The
idea of "free information" has been seriously damaged by the concept
of the 'net. People seem to have come to believe that all information
should be "free"...because the Internet seems to be "free". Actually
there are huge costs involved on the part of governments (taxpayers)
and of private parties and organizations who maintain servers,
websites, etc., etc. As with all mis-used resources, they have a
habit of being mis-used to death. Be very careful if you value
something.
