Phil,

Congratulations on proving yourself to be the best kind of guy out there.
My husband gave to me a Brent CXC (type of wheel) instead of a diamond
engagement ring, so in my book, you're an A-OK fella.

As far as type of equipment, my suggestion is to contact the school your
sweetie has been attending, and go with what she knows. She'll be
comfortable with the equipment, and you'll definitely earn "points." My
hubby found the best price for my wheel through Kickwheel Pottery
(Georgia??). We lived in Bend, OR, and even with shipping he received a
lower price than he found from any West Coast distributors. If price is not
as important as local service, again, call the school and get
recommendations for suppliers. The school will have had quite a bit of
experience with purveyors--they can tell you good suppliers from not-so-good
suppliers.

As for kilns, a new or good used kiln (electric or gas fired, depending on
preference) can be found if you shop around, make inquiries with the pottery
school, and local pottery professionals. Use a phonebook and call around.
Someone, somewhere, will have or know of a kiln for sale.

One word of warning, however: THIS WILL NOT END WITH THE WHEEL AND KILN!
Pottery is addicting, and once she has the bug, it won't go away. She'll
always be able to use some new equipment, a giffin grip, an extruder,
trimming tools, a torch, new glaze materials, a triple beam balance to make
glazes, more glaze books, more pottery books, more clay, more buckets,
brushes, sponges, a banding wheel, etc etc etc. Luckily for you, however,
this makes gift giving EASY--just give her more pottery stuff!

I'm not saying she has to have the aforementioned goodies. But eventually,
IMHO, she'll want them.

Good luck!

i really believe this benifit has been very important to my happy marriage.
my poor husband for many years could never get me anything. hate jewlery,
clothes etcetc. so i was always the empty handed martyr and he the cold,
unthinking husband who just could not do anything right. then when i took
pottery back up after a 20 year kid raising hiatus and turned into the
easiest person to please in the world. don't know what to get me, just let
me give you a few hundred hints complete with serial numbers or a trip to
home depot and he's become mr wonderful, sensitive always giving. you both
win when one partner becomes a potter. but do beware, the lists will be
endless and the level of orderliness of your household in general will go to
hell.

Just perusing all your notes and had to reply. I have been going to the
local community college taking ceramic classes for several years now. I
have either lived in an apartment or am currently leasing a small condo.
I have never had the room to own a kiln, but since moving into the
condo, we now have a garage. A couple of years ago, my fianc=E9 gave me =
a
wheel for my birthday. Last year I received an extruder. This past
semester, my fianc=E9 decided to take a class with me and is now totally
hooked on clay. We are now discussing a place of our own so we can get
a kiln and a slab roller when we have more room.

Life is wonderful!!!
Happy New Year
Suzette =20
