Stains are not melting into the clay.
My teacher where I learned, added one spoon of engob to 100 grams of
stains. I do not like it as even after bisque it is smearing.
My way: If you buy ready mixed commercial engob, add up to 50 even 100%
in wight stain. This way you have strong colored engob. The stain won't
smear, and it will not be that wet look. Yet if you do want the wet
look you will use it with a lot of water.
It is like working with poster colors on paper. I find these engobs
nicer in raku glazes too.

Have you thought about making a slip/engobe out of your throwing body?
Add stain and opacifier to taste for desired color.

It will fit your clay body, cause its your clay body,
It will look dry because its clay, not glaze
If you want it a it to look little wetter than just a clay body , or a
little more vitrified, add 2% increments of your favorite frit until you get
what you want.

Just think of it as a line blend with slip, going from bone dry to glossy,
with your favorite somewhere in the middle.

I know its a little testing, but its pretty simple, and it will work.

If you dont happen to own a scale, use bakers measureing spoons, its not
anything near as accurate as a scale, but if it gets you in the habit of
testing, your already better off.
