Just continuing this discussion.

Just wanted to clarify a distinction in firing horsehair pots and raku.
I take my raku slabs to 1850 F. to melt the glazes, etc.
For horse hair which has a burnished Terra Sig. I don't want to take it
hotter than ^012
in order to keep the burnished surface. You may get by with ^010 or ^09,
but I have been going to just 1150-1300 degrees. I don't wax them.
I also fire by myself. I take one pot at a time. And I am down to a 6
minute cycle because I am not losing temp.
I apply feathers or horse hair to the pot or roll the pot over them. I
cool the pot upside down
This has greatly reduced cracking. Fran at the Tin Barn in Manassas
mentioned ferric oxide. Isn't that Iron Oxide?
I have used ferric sulfide and ferric chloride for colorations in very
low temperatures using a torch. They are very bad. I would love to see
the effects of coloring with horsehair. Any picts?
It is really interesting to see the different methods people have developed.

Marcia in Montana
where we have lots of horse hair!

Regarding color on horsehair pots...
I spray diluted ferric chloride on my pots after applying the horsehair.
Ferric chloride has a longer window timewise, ie: you can still get color as
the pot becomes cooler. Depending on the depth of color you want you just
make the solution more or less dilute. I've found I have to be careful not
to get the sprayer too close to the pot as I spray, or I create cracks in
the terra sig.....sometimes it flakes off.
Ferric chloride is CAUSTIC....wear a mask!
There are pictures on my website. The pink is done with colored terra
sig....I imagine you could get a lot of different colors by using various
colored terra sigs. I've also used underglazes, anything with red it it
seems to burn out, but got some great turquiose once. Of couse then you have
no burnish shine left. Also, a friend of mine got blue by spraying on
diluted food coloring.......
try everything!
best regards to all,
Jennifer
