workshop dilema (long)

updated tue 18 dec 01

Maid O'Mud on sun 16 dec 01

I'm looking for help and guidance from those more experienced than I. =
There are 2 outstanding upcoming simultaneous workshops I want to attend =
(arrggh). Here's the situation...

The annual Ontario FUSION conference in 2002 features Ruthanne Tudball =
and Grace Nickel. It takes place north of Toronto, within comfortable =
driving range. Accommodations are really cheap, and most meals are =
provided. It's for 2.5 days

Coinciding with this is Vince P's 5 day hands-on workshop in NC. =
Problems are:
- have to fly there
- need accommodation
- our dollar is worth 1/2 of US dollar (well, almost!) approx. $0.62 at =
this time

*IF* I could find a free place to stay down in NC, then costs would be =
reduced to food and airfare (I can travel out of Detroit, lowering costs =
immensely).

Here's where the questions come in. =20

- I have seen none of the above, but must choose. Help!

- Is there anyone near Summersfield willing to put me up for 6 nights =
(or 2 people for 3 nights each or 3 people for 2 nights each???) =20

As there are only 15 people allowed in the NC workshop, I must decide =
before x-mas. Can anyone help?

Many thanks!

Sam,
I think it depends on which you are more interested in. We know Vince
does a great workshop. I know Riuthanne also does a great throwing
stimulus for experienced throwers plus her soda firing approach is
different and produces excellent results. I have admired Gail Nickels
soda firing results in Ceramics Arts and Perception.
I also was very impressed by Toronto and the Fusion Group when I went to
a majolica conference at the Gardiner Museum two years ago.
So, you have to choose which you want to learn about. NC is very nice also.
Marcia
Good Luck in choosing

Sam,

I will ask around and see if I can find you accomodations nearby. Vince is
staying w/ us, otherwise you could have the guest room. Also, you can camp
here if you wanna; you can borrow our tent. ;)

Sam

what I would consider would be if the cost were even, from which
would I learn and utilize more.  Second,  which Presenter would
I be less likely to have another chance to see.  If you know that
someone doesn't do workshops very often,  that might be an important
consideration.    and I might take a chance and write to
each to see if they are planning another workshop near to you at a later
time.  Where I live,  it is sometimes happens that someone to
do several workshops along the eastern seaboard.  or they might to
one in Philly in the spring and then one in Northern Va in the fall.
I know that this doesn't solve your problem,  but perhaps it gives
you a different way to look at your options.

this is the time that I really wish that I split myself into several
pieces and go several places at the same time.  and then merge back
with all the knowledge and experiences.

Millie in Md.   the houses where I live are starting to get
brighter and brighter with all the holiday lights.    way
back when decorations were simpler in the 40's early 50's,  My Dad
used to make  yard designs for a Number of people in Winston-Salem,
NC .  So at least once during the season, we would drive around and
look at the displays that he made that year, and see if anyone had put
up things from before.  He used to make really wonderful wooden sleighs,
reindeer, santa, and nativity scenes,  and they were all lit by floodlights.
I try to get out with my kids (adults, now) at least once.  some displays
are beautiful, some are gaudy beyond belief  and some are (at least,
to my Jewish eyes) the oddest combinations of sacred and secular
