I've been less than lurking lately. My computer died completely last
week, and I'm back on line, but I've had to spend so much time retrieving
data, etc., that I haven't played with either clay or Clayart. But I saw
this thread, and had to jump in.

I number my pieces, and the number includes information on the date. I
have one of those stamps that rolls numbers up, and it has six digits.
So for the 8th piece that I make in May of 2001, the number would be
050108 (mo/yr/pc #). Then I just roll the last digit up one for the next
piece, etc. (don't know what I'll do if I ever get to producing more than
99 pieces in a month - AS IF! I'm sure there are eight-digit stamps
available). I then sign each piece (I plan to get a stamp for that,
too). Numbering the pieces serves two purposes: 1) People make a big
deal out of numbered pieces (which was not my intent, but it does get a
lot of comment), and 2) when noting glazes I have used, I refer to the
piece number so I can keep track of results. And, of course, it tells me
approximately when the pot was made...
