From: Kate Johnson <>

You ask <concoctions, vinegar, etc., to join clay parts as a regular thing, not a =
last ditch try-to-save-it effort?>>

The Spooze concoction is a last ditch effort, or so it seems to me, to =
save something regarded as precious when it breaks after it has dried =
out and a break happens by accident.

The methods I am talking about are recognised regular production =
techniques for assembling plastic or leather hard pieces of work during =
their manufacture. I always use a deflocculated and thickened slip based =
on the clay in use to attach handles, lugs, spigots or knobs and to =
assemble slabbed and thrown work and I do not score the joining =
surfaces.

Those people who believe that it is always necessary to score both clay =
surfaces might question what methodology Wedgwood use for their white on =
blue ware. Do their craftsmen score both part?

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.

Dear Cindi Anderson,

Thank you for your supportive response.=20

It has been my lot to have had a technical education and to have worked =
in situations which called for alternative approaches to problems when =
traditional solutions would not work.

Often, I think I am at a disadvantage in the realms of clayart because I =
do not have the depth of artistic education that others seem to possess. =
Yet I realise those who have considerable depth of knowledge and skill =
in ceramic arts seem to give unreliable answers to problems of a =
technical nature which arise from time to time. So often, it seems as =
though the answer has to come from one of the dictionaries of clay and =
ceramics and any departure from what is printed therein is regarded as =
suspect. Although I have several of these, I prefer to consult =
specialist texts which are annotated or have been given comprehensive =
lists of references and extensive bibliographies. It is only through =
using these that I can trace the history of an idea and test the =
assumptions of modern opinions.

It is pleasing to be able to make a contribution to Clayart and to =
provoke or respond to interesting discussions.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.

Wishing all of you all the best for the coming festive season.=20
