casting slip (was re: digital camera)

Natalie - I would love to know when you're satisfied with the slip... there
are a number of repeat forms I currently hand build, but casting would seem
a sensible way to go - if it works... some of the forms are about 18" tall,
so keeping the temperature differential twixt head and foot to something
reasonable is interesting in a simple fibre top hat...

nothing unusual about your previous life - we're all guilty of that here, or
so it seems!

regards

Richard

Hi Richard, thanks for the welcome. You might be interested to know that
I'm developing an improved version of the raku casting slip, that casts
about three times faster than the existing NW802 Raku Casting Slip. It's
actually a grogged version of NW801 so it should give a whiter body than
'802 as well as being faster. If you're interested, I'll try to remember
to drop you a line when it's been tested to my satisfaction (that means
trying very hard to cause a thermal shock failure and not being able to
-- I'm a bit of a perfectionist about my body and glaze recipes).

I've just taken a little time out from pottery making and recipe-
tweaking to get the Crystal Glaze pages on our website updated... I've
been doing a lot more development work with them, optimising glaze/body
recipes and firing schedules, and have been obtaining bigger and more
separated crystals with a near-zero failure rate. On the strength of a
preview of this work, a local gallery has offered to start
showing/selling my work after Christmas, which is a first for me: unlike
my partner Heather, my background is not as a professional artist. (I'm
actually a retired medical engineer and counsellor, a strange
combination!). So in a sense, I guess that's a personal landmark for me:
I feel like I've actually accomplished something.

All the best,
Nali.
