Yes, Fran. All software programs generate a coefficient of expansion
number. We could argue about how they generate those numbers and how
accurate they are, but in most cases, calculation software will be an
enormous help in making glazes that fit your clay body. It's one of the
things they do best, and any one of the programs now on the market will work
for you to do this.
As far as books on the subject goes, there are snippets of information on
this topic in many books, but many of us, myself included, have been waiting
for Ron Roy to finish writing his book. I've been assuming it will be THE
definitive text so far. So look for those posts on "It's at the printer"
and order one.

Now I have a problem and I need help on how to solve it - chapter five goes
into this subject on an unprecedented level - anyone reading that chapter -
well maybe reading it 3 times will have this questioned answered in spades.

The answer does indeed have to do with calculating expansion rates and a
way of finding the approximate right expansion for each clay you use.

Trouble is I have some pretty strict rules about what I post to ClayArt.

Hi Fran,

You might like to look at a tutorial on the Matrix website which talks about
crazing and discusses strategies for control.

http://www.Matrix2000.co.nz

This link takes you to the Matrix website. Look the the Matrix Tutorials
link. This will take you to a list of the tutorials. I think the one on
crazing is number 10.
