knickers and confession of a schoolgirl

When I was in high school, late sixties,
girls were not allowed to wear slacks
or mini skirts.
We protested so loudly that the=20
principal posted notices all over school
that blue jeans were not allowed. So
we asked could we wear black or
other colored jeans, just to annoy him.
Next day posters appeared stating,
no jeans or slacks of any color.
The next year, after I had graduated,
the dress code changed and all=20
students could wear pretty much
anything they wanted, except
controversial tee shirts. I am still
ticked about that.

I was so determined to be "hip"
that I pushed the limit by rolling
my skirt up at the waist band,=20
shortening the hemline to above
my knees. Not mini length but
close. My father strictly forbid
mini skirts. And I had to wear
knee socks. So, on the day
club pictures were being made
for the yearbook, I go to school
wearing a sensible plaid skirt,=20
white poet's shirt and white
knee socks. Quite Scottish
I thought. I roll that waistband
up and expose my svelte knees
to the world and all my friends
think I am so chic. Time for
pictures. Well, I just happen
to be the president of the
FHA (future homemakers of
America) (do I hear laughing
out there???) which causes
me to be smack dab in the=20
middle on the front row.
Nothing between me and that
camera lens but a few feet
of ground.
I thought nothing of it. Until
the yearbook was published
and I saw myself, grinning like
an idiot with a skirt undeniably
in the mini range. Oops!
And guess who asks
to see the yearbook when I
get home that evening. =20
When Dad finally came down=20
from the roof (as in, he hit the
roof he was so mad) I was
grounded for eternity. =20
Looking back on that outfit
I wonder, "what on earth
possessed me to dress like
that?!!

"comfortable" look)

When minis hit, my dad had a "no more than two fingers width above the knee" rule. I had to roll my skirtband over so many times to get as mini as I wanted, I looked like I had a tire around my middle. So I wore bulky sweaters on top to cover it.

By the early 70's though, I was wearing these outrageously brief dresslike scraps of cloth with matching panties underneath.... I shudder now to think...

The day they finally let girls wear "nice slacks" to high school, the captain of the football team got suspended for coming to school in a skirt and hose to protest.

I wore my skirts so short back then that my parents were
delighted when I decided to wear jeans to school and joined
me in a minor protest when I was told to stop. The dress
code said "no jeans," but only denim jeans were disallowed.

Do you remember "pettipants" or something like that? They
were longer style panties with little ruffles around the
legs...? I believe they were a short-lived underfashion
fad.

Hummmm,

Since we were never permitted to wear jeans or even pants when I was in
school, I must be a few years older than you - at minimum. But I do remember
pettipants. I thought they were in for quite a while, but that may reflect my
perception of time rather than any kind of reality. We wore them instead of
slips, i.e. in addition to underpants. They were quite risque since it might
have been possible for people to see our legs through our skirts - not that
our skirts were sheer, mind you, but you just never could tell. . . .
