Dear John I will be happy to share that recipe with you.... I will
say that I originally had some cracking problems with that big gommy slip
trail you saw in the magazine ( 3 yr old slide ) and would fill it in as
best I could when it showed up .... sometimes that fixed it sometimes it
didnt... became too much of a problem not to mention carving around that
thing was making me cripple yrs faster.... also if your using this slip
TRAIL as a body cover I can not help you with that as the only thing I am
using it for is a raised design... I took Steven Hills recipe and made it
work for me but it was not instant success and all I can say is take what I
have made work for me and make it work for you... I am not giving you the
horses arse recipe I am giving you what works for me and its Steven
Hills original recipe plus the addition of CMC ..... I say mix up your
cmc to what the original recipe calls for in mixing cmc which I think is
1-2 tbsp dry cmc to a gallon of water... use hot water let it sit over nite
and then put it thru a seive.... then it says that 1/3 cup of this mix to
2/3 cup water... try that and if it doesnt work try more cmc mixed to it...
I use a slip trailer from Sallys beauty store which I think originally
is a hair dye bottle... a good gauge on if I used enough cmc (if I dont
use enough then it doesnt flow out that bottle very well). I mix up over 5
gallons of the stuff when I mix up and it last me at least a yr maybe
more... so its not like I do this every day but I do have to screen it
every now and again as the bucket gets messy and I do have to add more
water or cmc if it drys out ... All I can say is this works for me and
has been working successfully for me so look at the application I use and
if your doing something similar maybe its gonna work for you too... ok
here is the recipe....

#6 Tile Clay-------- 45.00
Flint/Silica-------- 21.50
Custer Feldspar-- 11.00
OM4 Ball Clay----22.50

for red slip add RIO 5% <------ thats the original but I find it
tooooo harsh for my tastes and use less... I use regular water (
well water very hard well water ) and cmc to mix this all up and I seive it
thru 100 mesh screen eventually... yeah yeah I use a jiffy mixer too :oD
usually its way too wet for my purposes and it takes a few days of
taking out the water to get the consistency I like to work with...

This my dear Clay buds is everything I can think of that I do to
make this work for my purposes.. took me yrs and like I said instant
success isnt that instant .... smaller designs work best and smooshin
(for lack of a better word ) after its set up yet not bone dry not only
cleans up the roughness but may help bond it to the pot better... so maybe
what I am doing to visually improve the trail is helping with the bonding...
I hope this helps you and anyone else that is trying to work with slip
TRAIL .... Cat
