That's the key!!! You won't do it if you hate it. I have a stationary
bike, hate it. Clothes hanger. I have a rowing machine, hate it, gone. I
have a tread mill, hate it, don't know where it is.

But I found a gym that appeals to my aggressive side. Kickboxing is
something I look forward to. We workout on heavybags for an hour, I love
it. Wrap up those hands but on those gloves and beat the hell out of a bag
while our drill instructor trainer yells at us. Everything melts. Granted
when I first started, I came home and dropped to couch with a major
headache. Found out the headaches were caused by not drinking enough water
and the exhaustion went away after a while.

Walking a dog is walking and it counts. So does shooting hoops, or anything
else that gets ya moving.

Now that I'm hooked, I've a year long membership to my gym, locked in. It
helps that I'm paying for it, since I'm so cheap I can't bear to miss a
class and not get my money's worth. It also helps that I'm bathing suit
ready long before the season!!!

I've now added jogging to my off days, had to buy an MP3 player though, I
need music to keep me going.

And again, I hate being one of these people. My family already ganged up on
me and told me they hate it too. But it has helped my studio time, I'm
throwing longer hours and larger pieces. I still have those two hour nap
days though = )

OK this sounds like a good group to join so I'll chime in too. Being a surviver of
back surgery right when I got my gas kiln built in 1995 I have been through quite a
lot. Yep ,have a stationery bike collecting dust too. What is working for me is
finding a walking buddy. Walk everyday---3 miles, can't back out if your buddy is
counting on you. And yes like chris for the first time I am going to the fitness
center . I go after I take that child to highschool. I am out anyway so it works
in the schedule-first thing in the morning is best. It gets you warmed up for the
day. I am feeling better than I have in years. I take this time to organize my
day in my head-also losing some weight for the first time in 3 years. Whew! Are
there any potters out there that don't have a bad back? Susan Balentine
Are you reading this Russel? Still laughing over that intro in your web site.

Hello folks,

I have my share of back problems and the key has been exercising to keep it
manageable. Here is my experience with it.

I don't hate exercising, but I sure would rather be doing something else if
I had a choice in the matter. The number one key for me was to join a club
where the atmosphere felt comfy and I can say that finally on the fourth
one, I hit the jackpot. If anyone is in the Chicago are, you may have
heard of it, it's Lifetime Fitness.

The second big thing for me is to have a great variety of classes available
because I get tired of always doing the same thing over and over. So I
alternate between kickboxing, weights, biking, steps etc etc and I also try
different instructors if time permits. The other thing that works for me
is that they change their schedule quarterly or so. Change is good :)

The third discovery for me was yoga classes which are an added bonus as
they allow me to relax and counteract stress. It also increases
flexibility. Of course, not all positions are good for the back
unfortunately; so I have to listen to my body at the first warning. I
found that Tai Chi is also good for that, but easily forgotten if not
practiced every day.

The fourth quite by accident point is that I also found a workout
companion. Whenever our schedules match we meet at the gym; it's nice to
know you have someone you can chat and laugh with while huffing and puffing.

As Jim would say, "Keep Centered" :)

WARNING: I cannot be held responsible for the above
because my cats have apparently learned to type.

My husband has been a potter for 40 years plus having injured his back
in a car accident
about 10 years ago. He does not like to exercise...however, I talked
him into going to
water aerobics with me. There is no stress on your joints and it is
stretching your muscles
as well. He is sold on it now and attends regularly.
