guild meeting

I threw a hissy fit at the guild meeting to get a message accross. When the
topic of conversation turned to the website, I addressed Geoff. I told the
group that I had placed a free ad in the NJ Calendar of events, which is
available on the web (www.visitnj.org) and click on "events", and there is a
brochure of the same available at tourist desks around the state. This ad
has a description of our November 10 - 11 sale at watchung, listed under
"craft shows". It also has a handy link to the website. I told the group I
am embarrassed by the website. If someone clicks on "sales" the only info is
"September somewhere". I would not attend a show after seeing that
"somewhere" printed on a website. I also told the group that I have been
requesting Geoff to correct the error of the wrong photograph since the
website went up last spring. I told Geoff and the group that I wanted my bio
removed, that since he cant comply after numerous requests and more than
six months, I dont want to be held hostage in cyberspace, to take me off.
Several other people said their info was wrong and they also had requested
corrections. Geoffs reply: "hey guys" you have to give me the information
about shows to put on the website. Excuse me, but does he not attend
meetings and get the same newsletter we all do? He did a crappy job with the
website and then plays dumb about information which should have been placed
in the "sales box" he designed. Pleeeeze! Then he says in front of
everyone that I should draw a picture of the pot which is mine, that he has
pictures which he does not know who they belong to. Then he went on to plug
his next venture which is to set up gallery pages to show many photos for
guild members who want to pay additional 5 bucks per month and more to him
to "set it up" if you dont know how to do it yourself.
Yeah right, Im sure he will do a wonderfull job on that.
Once again Geoff monopolized the meeting. I think I will attend one out of
three or four meeting in the future. I dont need to drive three hours r/t to
hear his mouth. That was the meeting! Carol

Hi Carol,
I _was_ a bit taken aback at your vehemence over the web site. Now
that you've explained yourself, I see what that was all about. I think
it would be a good idea for the issues relating to the web site to be
discussed with the guild group very calmly and constructively. It
should probably not originate with you. It should be more a discussion
of how to set up the web site in a more organized way, using as the
basis what Geoff has already set up.
The moral of this story is: sometimes you really do get what you pay
for.
Geoff needs to be much better organized. That the pictures are not
labeled- that's our own fault, we should have put our names on the
backs. However, since we did not, Geoff needs to bring back the photos
he has to the next meeting, or to the sales, and they can be sorted out
and either labeled for entrance into the web site, or returned to their
rightful owners. They should not be left disorganized on a desk
somewhere.
In terms of keeping the web site calendar updated, who takes the
notes? DeBorah? She should give Geoff a written list of what needs to
be entered on the web site each time we have a guild meeting. Then,
since he volunteered to do this, he needs to update in a timely way,
preferably immediately. That it's a hassle for him to get access, is
weird, and he needs to be asked about that.
Don't get all freaked. Here's what I suggest, should you care to hear
it! Swallow your mad for this once, call Geoff, and tell him you're
reminding him to please update 1) your photo- and describe the pot, even
if you feel pissed off! and 2) the calendar page, because the guild has
2 sales coming right up, and that's what the web site is supposed to
advertise.
And calm down, kiddo. You're not wrong, but Geoff (no matter how
inept) is what we've got right now, and to his credit, this was his
idea, and he is a volunteer here, so he's not all villain, either. The
idea still has lots of merit.
And since you didn't ask for advice, and since I gave some anyway, take
it or leave it as you choose! Fondly,
Mimi

Dear Carol,

Have you considered offering to help Geoff with this job? He might just be glad to
have someone else share the chores and the heat for a while.

During the years I have participated in my guild there has been a lot of griping,
most of it from the folks who do not do the work. One hears a lot of "They" didn't
do this, "They" didn't do that. Well, when one is the "They" it gives one a larger
perspective.

I sincerely hope my remarks do not sound insensitive to you. I simply believe that
any organization can succeed when everyone is on the same side pulling together.
Also, that there are usually too few hands for way too many chores.

Good luck,

Jean Wadsworth Cochran
