extruder idea/question

I was planning to make an extruder according to David's magazine =
article. However, when I asked my dad to make a visit to his friend at =
the junkyard, well, you know how the story goes...now my dad is in =
charge of the project! And yep indeed , he thinks he has a "much better =
way " of making it!

His idea for making a die for hollow cylinder forms entails hanging a =
pipe , extending an inch or two, with a plate over the top of it for the =
center plate. His theory is that now I can cut the top of the cylinder =
around the pipe and keep the clay from distorting. I wonder if the pipe =
will create some drag or there is something wrong with this plan that I =
don't see.=20

dads are the greatest,
carol, what if it does work? you will have probably one of the best extruders available and pops will have a new patent for the next craze in ceramic studio extruder designs!!! yahoooooo and......... i guess there is that small chance that pops will not turn out to be the engineer he thought he was, and we will say something like "do you still have those extruder
plans". bottom line is, you're gonna end up with an extruder. have a great time with the new toy.

Carole, your Dad's idea for the round hollow die might
work fine, but it runs counter to one of the design
principles for hollow 2-part dies.
That is that you want the inside part of the die to be
slightly higher than the outside part of the die. This is
because it is the outside, not the inside, of the extrusion
that we want to look good. Therefore, the outside
part of the die should be the last to touch the exiting
clay, accurately defining the external surface.
With a die like you describe, you are likely to get lines
around the circumference of your extruded tube every
time you increase or decrease the pressure on the
extruding plunger.

Another potential problem is that the clay will stick
to the pipe and be hard to remove from the pipe. I've never
tried this, but I would bet 10-to-1 that you will distort
the clay more trying to get it off the pipe than you would
just using a more conventional 2-part die.

Good luck with your project.
