tile setting job - metal

I am presently finishing making tiles for a large fireplace =
installation. I have done quite a few installations but have always =
used thin set with great results.
=20
This job consists of a large floor to ceiling column. This area is =
covered with wonder board and the tiles will be installed with thin set. =
One side of this column has a zero clearance fireplace which needs to =
be covered with tile right up to the fire box. I know thinset won't =
adhere to metal. My local Home Depot doesn't appear to have anything =
either.
=20
I have seen pictures of zero clearance fireplaces with tiles affixed to =
metal. I hope they weren't just pictures for a photo op! Has anyone =
done any similar type of installation? Does anyone have a zero =
clearance fireplace? If so, what did you use for an adhesive? I don't =
know how hot the front area above the fire box will get and whether that =
will present a problem with adhesives.

Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Hi,
Dow makes a silicone rubber that withstands temperatures to 450 F and you
know the metal can't be that hot or it wouldn't be zero clearance. Sets up
strong too.

>I am a Tile setter by trade and what you are talking about is correct. not
>much will stick to metal. you have a few options. one is to install

1/4" hardi-backer manufactured by james hardi inc. over the metal area
inwhich you wish to tile. you can do this with sharp dry wall screws
screwing them into the metal. will work have done many times. tile over
hardi backer.. or if not enough room, you can mix additives to your
thinset. which will stick to metal. I would use something like latex
additive made by Tec. or similar product.. this stuff is not cheap and will
ruin your tools if you let dry before cleaning... additives such as latex
or thin-set with additive already added, like full-flex thinset from TEC,
manufactured by JB Fuller, will speed up drytime so be careful. latex will
allow some movement without cracking grout or tile!!

Good luck..
