analyze ^6 clay body

Hello Again Clayart, (I think this is the last question for the night,
unless someone knows where my checkbook is)

I would appreciate some comments about the claybody I am using, I am trying
to further my education by studying it. It is called LINKS and is the
brainchild of Columbia, Missouri potter Sue Gerard. We measure it in
pounds. She gave me permission a while back to post it, but I am just now
getting to it.

50 Hawthorne Bond Fireclay from Christy Minerals 50 mesh
10 Custer Feldspar
9 Flint 200 mesh
8 Kentucky Ball Clay
7 Flint Grog from Christy Minerals
8 Redart

This is a all purpose body that fires to ^6 and is a nice buff. Sue has
used it for tiles, throwing, salt glazing, and sculpture with much success.
She has been working on making this body for a long time. She tells other
people not to use it on the stove but she does all the time. :-)

I have been looking at claybody recipes and even read Tichane's book "Clay
Bodies". I understand how to test it and I am in the process of doing that.
But let's say I wanted to analyze this body? Does anyone have any
observations that they can make? From experience? Something they read in a
book somewhere?

I am not looking to change this claybody, just understand it a little
better. Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons

Nikki,
This is a pretty generic, commonly used claybody for cone 10+. It might be
fine for cone 6, but I would want to test its absorption % at cone 6. Might
not be quite vitrified enough.

Hi Nikki,

You need to test for shrinkage and absorption first to see what the
problems might be and how to fix em.

Looks like the absorption may be a little high - I would recommend at least
3 more of Custer and it may take more - you want the absorption to be
around 1 to 2%.

If you need to know how to test - just email me.
