Dear Debbie Grant,

First of all, It would be impossible for me to comment on the chemistry =
of ITC products under salt or soda glazing conditions since I know =
nothing about the composition of ITC products. Furthermore, I would =
suspect that the ITC people would not be prepared to release their =
formulae because of the usual and fair considerations of preserving =
commercial integrity.

So an answer to your friends dilemma can only be given if the chemistry =
of the glazing process is understood.

My suggestion would be to use a high alumina coating compounded from a =
low alkali kaolin and aluminium hydrate, fired in the first instance to =
a couple of cones above the intended maturity range of the clay which =
will be used, to provide a sealed cohesive coating over all of the =
insulating firebrick surfaces

I think it is also important to choose an insulating firebrick which has =
a high proportion of alumina in proportion to silica in its composition.

Best regards,
