what mesh silica in glaze?

Hi again, Nikki.

You should sieve your glaze if you're using the
5x20 recipe--not because of the silica, but
because of the wollastonite. I'm not sure what
mesh size silica I have. My supplier just sells
one variety of silica, and I have dumped it into a
plastic trash bin, so I can't check the bag. If
the stuff you have doesn't work, then try 325
mesh. Probably, though, it will be adequate.

I know we have discussed this before on Clayart...but I am just now getting
back into glaze mixing/testing and would like to hear an update.

I would like to know if anyone has actually run tests using different mesh
silica for their glazes. I use 200 mesh silica in my claybody and would
like to also use it in my glazes instead of 325 mesh. I plan to run tests
on many recipes I have found on Clayart, but seldom does anyone post what
mesh silica/flint they use.

Thanks to Alisa and many others I have been able to find some glazes I am
excited to try. For those of you that test glazes found on clayart, what
mesh are you using?

Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons

When I first started making pots, I used to sieve everything in stages,
starting with a coarse one, and finishing with a fine one. gradually
over the years I have simplified down to the point where I now sieve
earthenware through a 100 mesh, and stoneware (if I sieve it at all)
through a 60 mesh. With stoneware I work on the principle that if I
sieve it down too fine, I might lose something interesting!

I must thank you again Steve for your 'unshiveing' idea.
I cannot imagine myself doing these last 100 tests with shieving.
If I find latter that the test failed because it was not well blended by my
electric drill, I repeat the test. As for the 1 kg batches, I shive, as I do
it not so often. Still there are some glazes that I do not shive the 1 kg
batch hope to get uneven coloring.
