potters in the outer banks

updated tue 25 sep 01

I'll be taking a trip to Avon, North Carolina next week.
It's on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

We go every couple of years to stretch out on
the beach for a week after everyone else but the
fishermen have gone home.

Are there any potteries in the area that anyone can recommend
to visit?

I was in New York City this week to see the American Shino exhibit
and also to see the Karen Karnes, Ken Ferguson, David
Shaner exhibit. It's the first time I've ever been
to galleries that specialize in ceramics. It was
very exciting to see and touch (yes, touch!) a Shaner
piece. Also Ken Ferguson's Rabbit on Wheels (see
CM June/July/Aug 2001). For so many years I've seen
the pictures of the pieces of American master potters.
Seeing real pieces is pretty neat.

If you live around NYC, I recommend a visit to these galleries.
They're practically around the corner from each other up
on 56 and 57 off 5th.

You might try calling Sandy Bay gallery in Hatteras Village
for more information about local potters
Check out The Fish House (formerly Billy's Fish House) in
Buxton if you have a chance. They
remodelled the place last year, unfortunately, but the food
was still pretty good. I'm curious to hear
if it's holding its own.

Hi Sandy, If you are staying at Avon be sure and visit a nice gallery called
Browning Artworks. It is about 10 miles south of the cape hatteras lighthouse -
right on the road- you can't miss it. Look for my pots too. Susan Balentine
