Here are some things that caught my attention this
week:

CNN said that Canada sent dog boots for the canine
corps. ( I grabbed up my dogs and cried and wished we
were all dogs, as they would never do anything like
this, and said a prayer for them and their controllers
in the wreckage)

Iran and Irag have begun to close their borders to
keep terrorists from escaping Afghanistan. (Now there
is a strange bedfellow)

Breat Britain lost nearly 200 people.

The UN is co-ordinating relief efforts.( I never
thought we would need it here, how arrogant and
blissfully ignorant)

Canada accepted the diverted planes. ( I heard this on
CNN about 20 minutes after the first one hit, and was
amazed by their bravery and compassion.)

China has closed its borders with Pakistan to contain
the terorist criminals.

A minimum of 62 countries have lost ones in this.

Bush, on the same day, announced that Bin Laden is
wanted Dead or Alive, and that it is UN-American to
attack or harm or harrass women who cover their hair
for religious reasons. This struck me as a poignant
example of how complex being an American is. For
those of you who have more specifically isolated
cultures, take a moment to appreciate just how hard it
is to define what being an American is for each of us
here. And take another to appreciate the robust and
simpler form of nationalism that you may enjoy.

Individual kindnesses from all around the world.

America was founded as a refuge for all peoples, and
in that sense, the whole world is full of potential
Americans. And despite the notion that cultural
diversity should be preserved at all costs, the idea
of a melting pot is profoundly beautiful.

As potters, we are a boundless community of workers,
and clay is its own language. I am sure that if we
could get in the same place, each and all of us could
teach each other what we know about clay without
words, just clay and gestures. That is why I love it
so much, it is beyond all nations, beyond us all.

We are all American Clay Artists, at least for now.
Rejoice in that.
