On Monday night Eric Wong aka ShinoWong gave a talk on shino.
He even rocked my boat. I claim to be casual but Eric has me beat. he
mentioned that he does not screen his shino. Just mixes it, lets it slake
and then glazes. Says he fires to Cone 11, so the materials melt properly
anyway. for his cups he lets them float in the shino for 2 or 3 minutes. If
they sink into the glaze then so be it. Let them sit at the bottom of the
barrel for 2 or 3 minutes. this means he may have to wad the pots like you
would a salt or wood fired pot but to get the desired thickness that is what
he does.
I asked for percentages of materials for his blue slip- a bit of cobalt and
a bit of manganese.
good on you Eric- keeping it simple and doing a damn fine job of making some
very nice pots.
cheers,
Tony
