showing one's work

I too am shy about showing my pots to potters, but when i went to NCECA
I brought about 30 snapshot sized photos with me, in case anyone wanted
to see.

Nobody ever asked .

I did show them to about six people, because I needed them to know what
I was about as a potter. The learning experience came when a potter who
was looking at them called his friend over and said "Look at these".

The person took them, turned them over one at a time and never once
looked down at what was in her hands nor did she ever stop talking to the
other potter.

She then handed them back to me and said,"Very nice".

She must have been a Zen master.

I did it a bit differently, I made about 50 business cards on the
computer that had my contact info as well as my web page on them.
Handed out two, I think.
In Denver I took 20 mugs with me to trade. I gave three away.
Don't feel bad.

Elca, Your message probably did more good for potters than you will ever
know. All of us who were touched by it will never be dismissive of others
work. We all know how we cherish the compliments of other potters and how
crushing criticisms can be. But too often we are busy polishing our own
egos.
Thank you, Judi Buchanan

Dear Elca.... I too feel really badly that this happened to you , I was
thinking about NCECA and how intense it was and how there were ??4000 ??
potters in one place . Maybe this was not a great place to bring your
pictures and show them strange as that sounds.. I know I felt bombarded by
all sides the whole time I was there .. the noise was deafening the action a
blurr... many a time I had to go sit somewhere and shut out everything that
was going on... Megga intense experience ... trying to focus on anything
took a iron will and an act of GOD.
For me if I were asked to look at someones pictures at this affair I
dont know that I could have given it the justice that it deserved , trying
to focus never mind THINK with all the distractions and noise and activity
.. You never did say what the situation was or where and when... was it
the dance nite ?? The only time I would have been able to appreciate
someones pictures would have been in my hotel room or in some quiet place
. Everyone was soo excited and hey out in public with other clay aholics
let loose from the studio ...
Next time you go to nceca bring slides to the clay art room on slide nite
or just go to the clay art room and fit in with a smaller group of folks
that are not sooo wound up... and now that you have spoken up all the clay
arters will have a heads up on how not at least trying to pay attention can
hurt someone deeply... CAT
