I just got some CMC Gum today to mix with my Crystalline Glazes but there
is no directions on how much water to use. Once it is mixed than how
much do I use in my glazes. I have never used this form of suspension I
have always used Epsom salts and people have told me that CMC is much
better. Can anyone give me some advice on this or where to go to get the
information?
Thank you in advance.

Cheryl,
About CMC,
1. It's easiest to add about 0.3 to 0.7% (less than 1 %) by dry weight
to the dry ingredients of the glaze, mix all well together, then add water.
2. Or, you can add 25 grams dry CMC to one liter boiling water, stir
vigorously. This will give you a thick CMC syrup which you can add to
replace some of the water in a glaze recipe.
3. CMC can affect the settling character of some glazes--suspends a
little with some, but can make others settle faster! Test, test, test
before you treat a whole bucket!
4. CMC tends to make glazes dry more slowly. If you add too much, your
glaze may take too long to dry.
5. There are better glaze suspenders, if that's all you want. CMC is a
very weak suspender in most cases. It puts sodium ions in the slurry.
6. CMC is organic. Bacteria like to eat it. It can tend to lose effect
over time in the bucket, I suspect because it's being eaten by the bugs.
You'll know, if the glaze stinks! :-( Adding a disinfectant to the bucket,
like chlorine bleach, may help. Again, test.
7. Search the archives for a Tony Hansen post of 10/24/99. Great
information!
Good glazing!

Ilene,
Take an empty plastic bottle and put 12.5 grams of CMC powder in it.
Then add one pint of hot water and let it sit overnight to dissolve
Generally 1 tablespooon of the CMC mix so 100 grams of glaze will
suffice. Mia in ABQ

put a couple of cups of hot water in a blender... add cmc powder a bit at a
time till it starts to thicken, then let blend for 5 min.

pour a bit in the palm of your hand, walk into a room full of people yell
"ACHOOOO" really loud and shake your hand with the cmc mix in it, let some
dribble into your other hand. Always good for a few laughs!
