I'm no kind of expert on Bali, but I've heard a few things. One story is
that some thousands or hundreds of years ago the Chinese business oriented
culture moved into indonesia and all the artist moved to Bali. I understand
the Balinese have a culture based much more on art than on technology. They
decorate everything. Poured concrete is carved before it gets a chance to
set. So, anyway....somebody says to a Balinese guy, "how come you people
are all artists?" The Balinese guy answers, "What artist? We just do
everything as well as we can." Which I take to mean that they put their
whole heart, soul, craftmanship, training, spirituality, etc. into their
work. The Balinese have a celebration every hundred years to insure the
continuation of the planet, but each time they do it they make it all up
again because no one alive has ever done it before. Last time was in the
Eighties...apparantly they did a good job, 'cause we're still here. They
don't have one calender but a whole panoply of calenders to measure all
sorts of different rhythms of nature and life.

Too bad we're not more like the Balinese..
Art and beauty are so far removed from the everyday (average) American
existence.
American culture = "tear down paradise, put up a parking lot" or
McDonald's or prefab metal strip retail shoppe'
Don't get me started...sorry
