Sorry, are you pressing them in a press mold or are you rolling the tiles
out on a slab and then pressing the relief into the slab ? Rhonda

Hi all
I'm at my wits end.
I'm pressing 6x6 tiles with relief decoration.
Whats happening is certain designs get a crack in the
same spot on each tile.i'm drying them very slowly(2
to 3 wks).
My clay body is heavily grogged (25%)here is the
formula.
fireclay 50
om4 25
tenn 5 25
med grog 12.5%
fine grog 12.5%.
What i dont understand is that on some designs not one
tile cracks.while on another my loss is 1/3.
This seems to eliminate clay and drying as a cause but
i dont know.
Can anybody help?
disgusted in Pa.

I'd say that this indicates a weak spot in the design. I'd bet that there's
a thin spot right next to a thick spot and your tile is cracking along the
thin spot. You need to redesign the tile.
Or, have you ever tried making this design out of Paperclay?

If those tiles that crack have a greater distance from the lowest to highest
parts of the relief carving, that may be your problem. You may have to
recarve that portion of the relief and recast the mold.
