attaching fiber inside the kiln lid -- then again...

Yacks! I hear your folks. Bad idea to put it inside. :) Thank you for
pitching in.

The issues are the eventual deterioration and flaking off during a glaze
firing, the exposure to the hot face, the deterioration of the wire holding
it in place, whether or not it will even stay attached, the handling of it
during replacement, and probably other things I'm forgetting now.

So now, I'm am starting over with this nice insulating board (insboard 2600
hd) which is rock hard. I need to put it on the outside and the following
suggestions have come to my attention, none of which I have given much
thought to.

o Attach the board to the lid with sodium silicate which would keep it in
place and thus avoid it being mishandled and broken -- should last forever
that way.

o Wrap the board in heavy aluminum kitchen foil and place it on top of the
lid during each firing. The foil would keep the fiber to become airborne.

o Same as above but with builder foil which I believe is used for roofing
insulation. I hear it has tar on it though. I am pretty clueless about
that stuff.

Are there any other material that could encase the board and withstand the
head radiated through the lid? I'm a bit concerned about the above
foils. Also where do I look for any material that may be suggested.

Thank you so much for your time!

Fabienne

Yes, I have learned from my mistakes...
I can reproduce them exactly.
