Anita,

Your question is the premise of the department we have in Pottery Making
Illustrated called "Off the Shelf." While most magazines feature book
reviews of current releases, we have a teacher, Sumi von Dassow, who reviews
books by subject matter. Her mission is to make recommendations in the same
way a teacher would recommend books to a class. In this case, her class has
about 18,000 students plus all the drop-ins on our website where all her
previous reviews reside. Check out her reviews at
http://www.potterymaking.org/sumi.asp. Hope this helps!

Arnold -- I looked briefly at the list and wondered if perhaps instead of (or in addition to) recommending amazon.com as a source, it might be possible to recommend our own Steve Branfman's The Potter's Shop. I recalled that there is now a website, searched the archives, and came up with: http://thepottersshop.blogspot.com/

I'm not sure the .com website with shopping cart is up yet, but you might want to check this out. Perhaps Steve is checking in on Clayart occasionally and would give us an update........

Just my .02

Sorry, I hit the send key too soon and miswrote the title of the book, it should be "The Potter's Directory...", not Dictionary.

Arnold,

One type of book occurred to me that shows different types of pottery for functional work and the basic shapes for them. The one I like and have is "The Potter's Dictionary of Shape and Form" by Neal French. If you want to know about different kinds of cups, the hollow ware chapter discusses many kinds and shows a variety of shapes, styles and colors, good handle designs and cross sections. I find it very valuable when I am thinking about making a new item or just wanting to try something different. I'm sure there are other similar ones, this is the one I am familiar with. I got mine at Clayart Center in Tacoma, WA.

I don't remember Hamer and Hamer. Is this still a suggested book?
