red moss glaze test results

I tested two versions of Lana Wilson's Red Moss glaze. One with frit 3269
in place of the P-25, the other with Tom Buck's suggestion of frit 3110
with additions (recipes below).

Color was pretty much identical in both tests... an iron oxide looking red,
similar to the paint Venetian Red. I applied thickly as recommended. Must
have applied too thickly (it was suggested to go 1/4 inch thick) because it
is flaking off in some areas. I was hoping for mottled red with black, but
I got straight red except in an area that I'd deliberatly applied thinner.

They were fired at ^06 ox along with some greenware, so it's possible the
atmosphere had something to do with the color development. I'll try again
in my next fire & let you know how it turns out.

It's a stretch calling this a glaze. The expansion is so low I am not
surprised it is flaking off. If you wanted to make a glaze that would
shiver it would look something like this one.

Hi Valice

I was just reading through the CM article (1995, j/j/aug) this recipe came
from, and Lana had a couple points she emphasized regarding this glaze:

- She usually sprays her glazes on (which I believe will yield a much
thinner and even coat than brushing, etc).

- She likes to layer it over a cone 6 lichen glaze.

- She descibes it as being tempermental and highly recommends your test
tile to have five different thicknesses.

- Also, she puts Moss Red through two firings.

Hope this helps
Jocelyn
