Hello,

Are any of you wood firing clayarters familiar with a device called
a mini-splitter ? We have a good supply of free wood but we're
having a difficult time getting our logs split. The mini-splitter
seems like a cheap solution at under 200$ but we're a little
reluctant to have it shipped all the way across the Pacific
unless it works well. The thing is quite simple, powered by a
hydraulic jack and operated by foot power, is it wishfull thinking
for us to believe this device can solve our problem? No way
we can afford the 1000$ ++ prices of the more powerfull ones
on the market.

Would anyone have any plans for building other or similar splitters?
Doesn't seem too complicated to build, but maybe something we
don't know ?

You can see the thing at:

www.minisplitter.com

Any advice appreciated,

thanks,

WOW. That does seem like something simple that would work well AND you
could probably build it or have it built. It's basically one of those
little hydralic jacks that go under the frame of a car. You just get one
of those and have someone build the frame.

However. $149 dollars doesn't sound like a lot for this.

Well...I used to do this plenty with a nice Double-Bit felling Axe...a hefty
single-bit works fine as well, or if one doesn't mind the ugly looks of it,
one of those 'splitting' mauls' I suppose could be tolerated.
It depends too on the specie of Wood, and it's tenacity to resist
splitting...and the knack one may have for helping the Wood decide who's
boss...

We used to cross-cut with a two-man 'Chamapion-Tooth' Saw, and then split
'em up with the Double-Bit...seemed 'fast' enough.
This on the coast just south of San Francisco...wood was all we had TO keep
warm with, and we had to get it and haul it home too...used to sling a chain
on some log, and drag the damned thing home at night on the back roads, or
on the Coast Highway...kinda 'iffy' sometimes...on the 'curves' and
all...some of the Logs were pretty hefty, and they'd slew some on that
chain...but they were way too heavy to heave-ho into the Truck...so thats
what we did.

Keeps you 'warm' more than once that way...

Good luck,

Phil
Las Vegas...where...I commenced to burning Hardwood 'pallets' for Winter
heat...cut 'em up nice and quick with a 8-1/4 'Skilsaw'...
