dihydrogen monoxide

As a long-time Director for Maydelle Water Supply, I can't let
Phillip's remarks about 'tap-water' pass without comment.
Water in America is more tested and regulated than ever.
In fact, the burden of expensive and excessive testing is having
profound effects on small water systems like ours. Some tests
cost over $500; not a big deal if you have thousands of customers,
but an added cost of over $2 per connection for our small system.

The number of people without access to quality drinking water
has been declining every year for decades. Bacterial contamination
is very rare today, and stringent reporting and re-testing regulations
are in place should bacteria be detected.
These laws are enforced by state agencies, but are required by
EPA regulations, so they are nation-wide.
We in the water supply business continue to be amazed that
people are happy to buy bottles of water for a dollar a liter, when
they could have a MORE regulated product from their faucet for
next-to-nothing.

Now minerals, and things we call 'aesthetics' are a different matter.
Things like iron can pretty well ruin the taste of water if present in
fairly small concentrations, and I have been in places where the
water did have a slight odor.
But, you can rest assured that water from a public supply, anywhere
in America, is tested and known to be safe and healthful. And,
minerals in small concentrations are healthful.
I think the 'vertigo' and 'loss of concentration' from drinking water
that Phil mentioned may be unique to Las Vegas. You see, there is so
much liquor served at all those casinos, the run-off probably makes
the water about 6 proof.
'Lemme see some ID for that lemonade, kid.'

Dear Dave,

This is so excellent that you are a Director part-time of the Maydelle water
supply.
You are a good guy, and they are lucky to have you.
That is an important responsibility, and my admiration to you on that.

A friend of mine just passed his tests and got the certifications for Water
Systems Management , I suppose it would be called...and he and I have had
some nice talks about Hydraulics and types of Pipes, and how things can and
do get INTO water, and how to see to it that that does not happen...neat
stuff.

Anyway...he will not drink the water here at all...

I believe you that much has improved in these matters...broadly, and I do
not know just what it IS in the water here that is so bad...but it does make
many people nausious, and it does mess with their bodies in odd ways.

My water here used to get compliments it was so nice and agreeable...long
passed now.

Now I appreciate that some 'tastes' may object to water that actually IS
fine...and that is a different business from where it makes one sick TO
drink it...I did not know HOW 'sick' it was makeing me untill I stopped
drinking it...having happened to have switched to (yes I know,
'questionable') Bottled-Water.

I liked the 'Dihydrogen Monoxide' mention...it is nice to see it's 'other'
name once in a while...that was fun.

Thanks!

Philip
Las Vegas...
