kiln book reference

updated sat 28 jul 01

I'm looking for a GOOD reference on electric kiln firing technique.

I've bought (And am returning) Zakin's "Electric Kiln Ceramics," (Mostly
poor b/w photos & not NEARLY enough information on firing).

I'd LOVE something tat explains more about ramping, methods, different
types of glazes/clays & the techniques needed to achieve different
results, etc.

All suggestions GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you ALL for your help on my questions that I've been posting
recently.

You might check out the new book; "Glazes, Cone 6 - 1240 C", Michael
Bailey, by A & C Black/ University of Pennsylvania Press, 2001.

Electric Kiln users manual by Harry Fraser. A & C Black, Ceramic Skill
Book series. UK pounds 10.99, USD 15.75 (approx). What Harry doesn't
know about ceramics isn't worth knowing!

Susan, the ISBN of Harry Fraser's book, The electric kiln, is 0-7136-3745-5
That should be enough information for your to order it.
The publisher is A&C Black London and the cost here is 9.99 pounds
sterling.
The series is "Ceramic Handbooks".
They are a good series. But perhaps you have something similar over there.

Jimmy-

My American edition of Harry Fraser's "Electric Kilns"
was published by Watson Guptill: ISBN 0-8230-1610-2

(The original British title was "Kilns and Kiln Firing
for the Craft Potter.)

Please note that this is the 1974 republication of a
1969 book. Nothing in it about electronic controllers,
fuel conversions, or other more recent innovations.
Also, if you were put off by the number of B&W photos
in Jeff Zamek's book, please note that ALL of Fraser's
photos are B&W. On the other hand, it's entirely about
the tech (kilns and firing), not the art, so it might
be closer to what you want.

Snail, et alia,

I thought I would stay out of this thread on electric kilns, but here I am.
Harry Fraser's book, The Electric Kiln, is of probably greater use to people
outside the US. He refers to many materials that are not available to those
of in the US, and a good deal of time is spent in building an electric kiln.
I much prefer Richard Zakin's Electric Kiln Ceramics, which is more
appropriate for US electric kiln firing. But Zakin is, of course, not the
only source; most of the ceramic books of recent years offer help in
electric kiln firing.

Snail, dear friend, I hope I do not offend.

Bye the way, I have couple of ceramic pieces waiting for you--one from
Valice and one from me.

Regards.

The book Charles and others are referring to is an earlier one by Harry
Fraser. The Electric Kiln Users Manual is a recent publication, NOT a
re-working of the older publication, and entirely relevant to Kilns in
use today.
