To all ye who attempt last minute projects
a cautionary tale. Lisa I hope you read this as I won't clog your
computer at this time:
The GOOD NEWS
I sent two recipes to you Express Mail., They will be there by 3 PM
tomorrow (Deadline)

TALE OF TECHNOLOGY WOES (for humor and possible example of Murphy's law)

Mel ,your curse landed atop my ignorant head.

Friday AM
I find out the REAL scoop on the cookbook and vow to submit photo and
recipe

Friday: work all day at studio as usual

Friday PM: get home, start going through digital photos. discover they
are only 72 dpi, not 300.
NO PROBLEM! Realize I can change the dpi. OH NO! discover I can get a
300 dpi but a very TINY picture. (Postage stamp size )
NO PROBLEM! Go through discs to find the LARGEST picture file I have.
OH NO! Still 72 dpi, same problem.
Don't own my own digital camera so not sure issue can be resolved with
digital camera.

NO PROBLEM!
Saturday AM. decide to tale Lisa's advice. Go to Camera store with
slide.
OH NO! Camera store # 1. Doesn't 'do ' slides. NO PROBLEM! try another
store.
Camera store # 2. Thinks they scan slides, but isn't sure. Says it will
be $25 dollars and one week, for one slide. OH NO!
Camera Store # 3. Knows they scan slides. Isn't sure how much. Tells me
to come back Monday when, 'The boss is here'. Says it takes three days.
OH NO!
NO PROBLEM!
I spot a Kinkos copy center across the way.
Lad in Kinkos says they absolutely scan slides and the cost is $9.95 per
slide. Says it takes 24 hours, or sometimes less if they aren't busy.
BUT the slide scan guy won't be in till Sunday afternoon. But the lad
is very helpful. OK, I CAN LIVE WITH THAT.
Then I go to work at studio, as usual.

Sunday PM I returned to Kinkos with slide. Slide guy isn't in yet but
I leave slide and info and they assure me 24 hours or less . So I think
OK I CAN SEND IT OUT MONDAY AND IT WILL STILL GET THERE BY WEDNESDAY!.
So I go to work, this time at office to tend to increasing backlog of
e-business inquiries.

Monday AM. Go to work at Studio, as usual
Monday Noon: Call Kinkos. They tell me they are sorry, but everyone
goofed. They don't scan slides after all, but recommend that I go to
Camera store #3 as they are sure that they do slides over there. OH NO!
Realize now I will have to jettison the slide scan and just send a
recipe. Too late to search for a decent photo to scan.

Monday PM. Stop at Office Depot on way home to get some supplies. Notice
that there is a Microtek full size flatbed scanner with a slide
attachment on sale for $89.00. adaptable for IMAc and Pc. WOW!!!!
Heady with potential, I purchase it. O BOY!!!

Monday midnight: What is the problem with this memory hungry, friggin'
software? Everything downloaded Ok ,but the friggin software won't
recognize it's own friggin scanner. The computer devices and volumes
panel indicates that the COMPUTER recognizes the existence of the
scanner, but the software keeps giving me snotty messages like, 'you
must not have it plugged in", "I don't SEEE YOOOOUUUUU!". etc.

Tuesday 1 AM. I send an email to Microtek support. Phone support closed
at 5 PM.
Still determined, I will call them Tuesday morning. whip out a scan
and send it to Lisa.
Tuesday 7 AM I call Microtek support. Am on hold for 20 minutes. Hang
up. No email response from them either.

Tuesday 8 AM
Write up recipes in Arial font with three different versions, so
hopefully Lisa's will be able to open one of them. Put in disk mailer.
Go to PO. Send to Lisa. Go home. Replace scanner in box. (I did double
check on the return policy).

TIme to catch up on simpler activities now, like glaze testing, starting
a business, working on project bids, other deadlines and working with
clay!
no rest for the wicked

sigh and a wry smile
good luck with the book Lisa, I am sure this tale is NOTHING compared to
what you are going through!!!!!

And if the recipes don't make it in time, enjoy the recipes yourself
someday!

cheers

Hi

It's experiences like that that keep IT folk like me in bread and butter -
thank you.....

and as always, I'm deeply embarrassed at how poor the industry is at
putting its wares upon the market. imagine if cars were like that....

Next time you try to change resolution on a [larger than you need it to be]
image, try looking out for a control that allows you to decouple the screen
size in pixels from the printed size in ins/cms/whatever. In Photoshop, you
have to switch off "Resample Image" before you change the dpi setting - not
sure what that is in other graphics progs...

This isn't helping, is it?

Richard
