(My apologies for not digging back through the digest to find your name)

This question brings to mind the results of a study I read about in the
newspaper.
I realize there all ALL kinds of studies and some of them are bunk but
this one I liked so I remembered it.

The study showed that many children who suffer from allergies are
children who have not grown up playing in the dirt, but who live and
play primarily indoors or on artificial surfaces outdoors. Especially
children who's environments are kept EXTREMELY clean, i.e. sterile, i.e.
who lived in households where lots of cleansers and anti bacterial
agents are used to keep the environment 'clean' and not subject to
exposure to nasty dirt and the like.

The study went on to say that digging, playing in dirt and on ground
would appear to be beneficial because in the digging / playing process,
molds and microbes are released. They in fact appear to inoculate the
child. So exposure early in childhood is good and makes for better
resistance and health later in life.
This is stuff you know instinctively, but interesting to read it in a
'study'.
