Jonathan
Am somewhat sheepish to recommend some geology books to a geologist, but
the following two books are a joy and great companions for a road trip.
They give geological features and sites of interest, indexed by
highways. The chapters act as geology tour guides for whatever road you
are on! The geological information is well written and presented and
intelligible and of interest to the lay person as well. (I.E. your
wife, the non geologist!).
And it IS interesting reading for a potter as well, as you start to make
connections between what is in/on the pot and what is in/on the ground

BOOKS:

Roadside Geology of Oregon and
Roadside Geology of Washington
by David Alt, Donald W. Hyndman

(other states available...available in paperback)

Also , if you are into books, new and used, and have a day in Portland,
Powell's Books on Burnside is a must.

Mt. St. Helens is unfathomable. I saw her go and will never forget it.
Talk about a geology lesson.
