Anyone with anything in the least to do with or
interest in clay is hardly likely to be shunned or
tossed out of Clay Art. Or the "Ceramic Arts Discussion
List" as it is officially known.

Look at me... Not laid a finger on an honest lump of
clay in years, but as long as I am really good, I still
get to play with you lucky, lucky people who are
working in your own fields. Whether that is hobby,
amateur, professional... It really does not matter
because there is something very humbling about the
whole process. And for all the ranting and raving (on
occasion) both on and off topic, everyone is quite
civilised.

The only people who have felt need to leave this happy
group have been (now how do I say this without
upsetting anyone?) those people who go to classes where
they paint onto manufactured ceramic products. They
have been made to feel uncomfortable in the past.

But then again, so have those who felt that discussions
on casting have been malicious. Or those who make
non-functional teapots. Or any number of people who
feel personally insulted by pretty general comments. It
is all the rough and tumble of a pretty gregarious and
diverse playground. But even those who play have
serious intentions most of the time and the
overwhelming friendliness and willingness to help
others is very touching to witness. It restores faith
in the human condition, which is constantly reported
otherwise in the media.

And you will find there are several sculptors hidden
away in this group. Do not presume everyone can throw a
40lb pot at the drop of a hat! And the way ceramic
courses are going in colleges, the number who can throw
will be diminishing over the next years, so you may
soon end up one of the majority if you stick around
long enough!

Janet Kaiser - Really excited to be meeting Jeff v.d.B.
visiting from the Philippines tomorrow!! Following the
group of 10 from Switzerland yesterday (including some
Path Makers) and the 11 from the USA last week
(including 3 Clay Arters and some converts) it is a
great week for us.
