repost of how to search archives by email

updated thu 7 jun 01

What can I say? I must be having a bad day. I meant well, but I had =
made another typing error. This is a reposting, with the errors fixed. =
My apologies to all.

The command to get the reference card from the list server should be =
INFO REFCARD
The List Server correct address should be: LISTSERV@LSV.CERAMICS.ORG

++++++++++++++rePOST with corrections++++++++++++
This is a lengthy message so if you already know this, hit delete. If =
you don't know how and want to learn, read on because it's really very, =
very easy and fast.

Some of you may not realize that you can EASILY and QUICKLY search the =
Clayart archives just by sending out e-mail messages to the List Server. =
Your answers will come back to you in the form of regular e-mail =
messages. You do NOT have to go the the Clayart web site, and sit there =
forever watching a sloooow search, and then laborously read through the =
archives while still on-line, typing up your telephone line.

For example, last night I sent out an e-mail requesting a listing of all =
messages containing the word "wadding", so I could learn how it's made, =
how to use it, etc. Ten minutes later I checked my e-mail again, and =
the List Server had sent me a listing of all messages matching that =
search, and also told me how to pull them as regular e-mail messages. =
So I sent another e-mail requesting copies of all the messages about =
wadding that it found in it's search. Checked my e-mail again before =
going to bed, and all the messages arrived. Wonderful stuff! Fast! =
Easy!

Messages that you send to the List Server cannot contain a subject line. =
In the body of the message, you must not include a signature or ANY =
extra text, no extra spaces, no extra blank lines. =20

For example, my first message to the List Server to search for all =
messages archived that contain the word "wadding" looked like this:

SEARCH CLAYART wadding

After I received the mail from the server listing all the messages =
related to my search, it told me what to type to actually get those =
messages. I simply copied and pasted what it told me into a new message =
to the List Server. What it sent me looked like this:

To order a copy of these postings, send the following command:

GETPOST CLAYART 88 133 143 170 293 6821 8468 8592 9300 11594 11609 11640
13667 13721 13744 18193 22199 22381 22416 22493 22509 22574-22575 22579
22673 22738 22799 24595 24869 25514 25598 27454 27512 27735 33384 34461

92900 92922 92952 93141

HOWEVER, the List Server is just a simple computer and only does what it =
is told. It only understands specific words. Because the message =
reference numbers wrapped around several lines, I had to manually in the =
words GETPOST CLAYART at the beginning of EACH line, so the body of my =
message to the server actually looked like this:

GETPOST CLAYART 88 133 143 170 293 6821 8468 8592 9300 11594 11609 11640

I also wanted to get copies of all the glaze tests that Alisa had =
previously posted, that I missed. My request to the List Server was =
simply this line in the message body:

SEARCH CLAYART glaze test WHERE SENDER CONTAINS aliskin@MAIL.DK

Lots of fun, easy, and I'm grabbing some valuable information. When I'm =
done this I plan on getting all of William Edwards posted glaze recipes =
the same way.

To get some instructions sent to you from the List Server with more =
detailed information about searching, etc. send an e-mail to =
LISTSERV@LSV.CERAMICS.ORG with NO subject line, and in the message body =
write thest two words INFO REFCARD
Type nothing else! No signature line, nothing.

Happy searching through the archives! Enjoy!
