Just tried the formula of one third slip/ one third
vinegar (white) & one third karo syrup....on two brown
stoneware pieces....
Was totally inept..... brushed it on for several days
b4 I fired the pieces......
to a bisque... at 04....they came thru the firing with
cracks intact!!!!!!! Total loss....

Miriam,
The best way I have found to fix a crack,
especially in greenware, is to file off some
bisque powder of the same clay and mix it
with "Bray Patch" that you can order from
Archie Bray in Helena, MT. Force that into
the crack and smooth the surface. I have also
mixed the powder with "Apt II" with pretty
good results but I like the 'patch' better.
The reason I like to use the bisque powder
is that it will not shrink as much as using
greenware powder does when fired so the
crack tends to remain 'filled'. If you
could get some powder from a highfired
chard and use it the same way you might
have better luck yet-I have never tried it.
Good luck. --Reg
