request: a very salt receptive slip for b-mix

Hi:

There are lots of possibilities for salt slips and I'm don't know what you
want exactly but porcelain slips with a silica/alumina ratio at, and above
5/1 will take a salt glaze very well. You can add colorants to these slips
and get a wide range of effects and textures.

Here's a basic recipe for cone 10.

Grolleg Kaolin 50
g-200 feldspar 25
Silica 25

If you want a flasher try:

Grolleg Kaolin 50
Helmer Kaolin 20
Neph Syenite 30

You can make shino slips by taking any shino glaze and raising the clay to
40 to 50%. These have a very good success rate. If you apply these to
bone dry ware or bisque you'll get the shino crawl thing happening. If you
take out all the kaolins and ball clays in these slips and replace them
with Helmer Kaolin in the 40 to 50% range you'll get an Orange-Orange Trix
Cereal shino slip. OK, I embellished that a bit but it's a good orange if
you don't pile on the salt.

Have a good workshop and learn a lot, Craig Martell in Oregon

Throwing a few pots for a summer salt workshop. Interested in a =
receptive salt slip to apply over my throwing body, B-mix. In reading =
over the archives it looks as if B -mix is rather bland in the salt =
kiln. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig
