setting tiles

Not being greatly experienced, I read up a bit before attempting my first
tile job. Any surface, whether vertical or horizontal should be solid and
stable; but your vertical surface should be well anchored to your framing.
The books recommend a cementboard underlayment anchored to the studs with
screws and with all seams taped with fiberglass tape. This is pretty much
the standard for shower enclosures and such things, I believe. Stucco seems
to me to be too rough a surface to easily work over, even if it is well
adhered to the underlying structure. But how permanent does it have to be?
Maybe you can tolerate a few tiles falling off every few years.
