Dannon responded:

"Yes, Joyce, it is true: very tall pots do not have to be good.
I'm glad to note that you understand that so clearly. Tallness
is it's own reward. The other truth is that 40" platters do
not have to be good, either. Width is everything.

Pardon me joshing on this "

Well, shoot, Dannon... had me goin' there for a minute.
Heck, dreamin' of smushin' together enough clay for a 40" "irregular"
platter... swirlin' and smearin' 4 or 5 contrasting slips ... impressin'
with lots of leaves and creosote buds ... punchin' the whole thing around
a little ... spottin' with thick drips of soda ash, overfirin' until the
edges are burned ... acceptin' the slumps as art ... callin' it Mojave
Primitive... or maybe just Mojave Primo ... or even Louis Primo ... and
makin' a name for myself ...
and then you had to add that soulcrunching
last line..... "joshing" ....
shucks......
I AM gonna' throw in some sticks the last 20 minutes of my next reduction
firing, though ... see what happens ... better not have been joshing about
that .... my heart is set......

Joyce
In the Mojave where I found that yes, indeedy, there were more errors I
could compound ... all in the same day... while re-learning my Bailey
extruder. Found out that if the clay is stiff and one punches holes, fills
them with water in order to soften the clay in the barrel... tests, finds it
IS soft ... steps on the compressor pedal ..... well, one should stand back;
not look down the barrel to see what's happenin' ... or one's nice, clean
face and shirt will get splattered ... big splatters ... with BROWN clay..
appalling sight, even to me... and I toiled in a high school ... 'course I
COULD stand out on the road with a Mojave Primitive sign around my own neck
... just stand there in the 111 degree F sun... no firin' needed.... bet
they'd just throw money my way...... think?
