Glad to see I can get a few replies to a post and only 40% contain =
personal attack....nice holding back by some of you...
I have never been "green" ...I was in the sign biz for a long time =
and have worked with, around, under, over, and in between hot glass....I =
have an aloe vera plant on the windowsill to prove it....I also know an =
industrial process when I see it...I hardly ever get misty when I walk =
down the coke bottle aisle in the supermarket, even if I do get to see =
maybe a thousand shapely, cool green bottles all arranged in a pleasing =
way....I used to be a big Peter Max fan until I saw him hawking crap on =
an informercial...I still am a big fan of Warhol even though I know he =
couldn't have personally pissed on all those piss pics.....He used to =
whup out a portrait for some big name and then hide it in the back room =
for a couple weeks to give the impression that it took some skill, =
effort, thought etc.....HEHEHE
Leonardo Da Vinci(again) said something like "Painting is the only =
noble art".....I heard that as a teenager, and I've been disecting it =
ever since.....That statement cuts out music!...Perhaps because a =
musical composition can be repeated, although in his time, or now, I =
don't see a live performance being exactly the same...He did not include =
writing, drawing, prints, sculpture, or the art of salesmanship, or the =
fine art of the con-artist.....Hucksterism may make money....It may sell =
well...It may elevate glass from paperweight status to the top =
galleries.......My good buddy Leo was a pretty sharp dude; why would he =
leave out the con-artist?
I don't think he was talking about the fine art of house painting =
either....Fine art comes from a deeper spot than technique alone or =
process alone....Motif has a great deal to do with it....symbolism =
too....There is more to life than instant gratification, cost =
effectiveness, and efficient production...My mother gets 5 "send us $ =
and we will tell you how much you've won!!!!" letters a day...I don't =
think Leo mistakenly axed the fine art of outright fraud....Painting =
requires the artist to lose a little skin and guts...Real painters end =
up with less left when they are finished; not more....They have to give =
more than they take....I still would value a Chihuly recent, one eyed, =
sketch more than something from his factory(Warhol called his studio =
"the factory")....Warhol's work was a statement about and against the =
disposable world we live in...I believe Chihuly might want his name on =
the actual soup cans as opposed to painting them on canvas....Exactly =
the opposite of Warhol...Warhol glamorized commercialism to satirize =
it....Chihuly just glamorizes commercialism...
Gayle was right on about us potters needing a couple of good =
hucksters....Some of our production people might even make the shelves =
of Walmart, and the exposure might even trickle down to those of us who =
do clay for a higher purpose
I'm sure there are a few glass artists in the world....I've seen =
some outrageously beautiful glasswork...I liked the way Waisman(pointed =
out by Abadi) brought so much of her ceramic thought to glasswork....As =
Craig said "In any sort of discipline, painting, pot making, sculpting, =
the work can be art or not, alive or dead, depending on the skill, =
perception, and intent of the person doing the work".....
=20
On the other hand....Da Vinci left out pottery too....Guess noone =
can be right all the timeHEHEHE...
If someone who doesn't know me asks what I do, I say I'm a =
painter......In this world they always think "house painter"....Then I =
correct them and tell them I do noble, fine art, painting.....

indulgences and snakes handy"
