burning temporary armature

if you make a disposable armature inside a handbuilt vessel out
of paper or other combustibles, and you wait until it is completely =

bone dry, can you burn out the combustibles while it is still =

outside the kiln without setting it up for cracks?

I don't want to contaminate my elements with carbon residue. =

I know that it will not "hurt" my kiln, I just don't want to do it.
I like a really clean electric environment for color reasons.

Is there anyone who does this regularly and has some tips?

Thank you

Hi,
I create armitures out of wooden bar-b-que skewers, and if they are not long
enough I take them together for the necessary length. I use them for
figurative sculpture and find that they work remarkably well, not only to
support the main body, but also for extended arms, legs, and other body
parts that may need the necessary support. I dry all my sculpture very
slowly and as it becomes leather hard, slowly and carefully, remove each
one, then i fill the top hole with a tiny bit of the clay and cover for a
day or so. Actually the whole left thru the body of work, provides a great
outlet for moisture during the beginning of the firing.
If you are doing "busts" it is a whole different story, and then i use a
large metal armiture for the head, and when i finish the scupture, and the
clay is leather hard, I cross section the top 1/4 of the head, and remove
it, and dig out the clay inside, leaving the face and back of head intact,
slowly pull away the armiture, and score and slip the area that was removed,
and return it to its original place at the top of the head. Plug up the
hole with a tiny bit of soft clay.
Tis really easier than it sounds! HONEST!
Hope this is understandable?
Any other qusetions, feel free to email me off list if you like
Best of Luck.

have you considered putting in a saggar and placing the saggar in the kiln?
you can make a saggar really quickly out of slabs. they are good so long as
they dont crack and break. chances are, this is the best resoulution to
keeping the carbon somewhat seperated from the atmosphere kiln. the only
thought here is that the smoke has to go somewhere right?

as you can imagine, if the work is bone dry, the immence amount of heat
created by burning out the newspaper will crack the work. if it is still
green, the heat will dry it out unevenly and will still crack. the only way
i can think of to do it would be to fire it out. know anyone who bisques in
a gas kiln? that would be the ideal situation.

good luck.
