old paragon kiln

Deb,
I am an ex-owner of an ancient Paragon model A - 99- B (three rings
stuck on top of one another, 4- way switches from off to high). The only
thing that ever went wrong with it was that the top ring light did not
show up one day - the wiring inside the becalite box shorted, the box,
or its' part melted and had to be replaced. If none of the lights come
on in your kiln - well, maybe it's the same thing that happened to me a
few days ago when firing my new(er) kiln: the ware stuck nicely, cones
on the shelves and in the sitter, pushed the plunger in - no light comes
on... I broke out in sweat. Darn, I have done this several times in my
life...Had a look around - and realized I had forgotten to plug the
thing in.

Back to the ranch - maybe the same thing happened to your kiln - the
main box, where the main cable comes into the kiln from the wall is
burnt.. There is really not that much there that can really break They
are working horses...

good luck

Hello,
I've just acquired an old A-77 Paragon kiln. Think it is about 20 years =
=3D
old. It looks very good, clean and no cracks, etc. But when I plugged =3D
it into an outlet that works for a lathe, nothing. Aren't those little =3D
red lights above each dial supposed to light up? It has sat for about =3D
ten years, unused. I was thinking that connections might have corroded =3D
or oxidized and will take it apart and see what I can see!

Any suggestions?

THANKS!
Deb in Oklahoma

Did you put a cone in the sitter and puch the button? Or if there is no
sitter, you need to turn the switches on to "low " for the light to come
on. I bought one a few months ago that was returned because the first
buyer said it didn't work. They forgot to turn it on. I lucked out.
otherwise, yes it could be corroded. You need to sand the conections.

Deb, the Paragon A-77 is a 4-wire kiln. Is your outlet 3-wire or
4-wire?

The problem may be as simple as dirty Kiln Sitter contacts. The
problem you describe usually has a simple solution.

Good luck!

Marcia offered excellent suggestions for getting the A-77 working.
However, if you clean the Kiln Sitter contacts, use a soft pencil
eraser instead of sand paper. The contacts are delicate.

Lyn Peelle-

Your question about an old Paragon kiln came at the right time. I just bought
a new Paragon to replace the old A-88-B kiln that someone gave to me years
ago. (It came without the manual as well.) I think it is very similar to
the one your niece just acquired, only the 88 model is bigger than the 66
model.

A simple call to Paragon (1-800-876-4328) and I had a manual in my hands
within a week. I've also been able to order parts through them, and have been
very satisfied in dealing with Paragon.

Hope this helps.
