crack lines

Hi all,

Just looked at some planters that I made over the
winter, drying very slowly, and notice that some of
them have crack lines while some don't. These were
made from slabs about 1/4" thick, stoneware. I rolled
the slabs to thickness, but some have cracks where two
slabs were put together. I roughed up the joints and
painted them with slip before joining the seams, so
don't understand why some cracked and some didn"t? I
can't believe that it is just a random act, but rather
that I did something right and something wrong! Please
advise. Also, to correct this, I put a little 50%
acetic acid on the cracks, poured slip into the area,
and then brushed and smoothed the area. Is this an
acceptable approach or should I do something else? Or,
boo hoo, am I going to lose these pieces? I would be
grateful for any help. Thank you, Sandy Lindsey in
Mystic CT where the sun is shining but we need rain.
