Dear Craig;

I reccommend that you arrange the burners to fire in from a position
tangent to the circle of the shell. Additionally, it would be very good t=
o
have them fire in under the first level of the setting. You can get a
spiral effect this way, which is a good thing.

A question for the kiln building guru's. I've just about finished =
building an envelope kiln. It is a cylinder that is 4ftx4ft (I used a =
cylinder because it was free.) I've erected a 16 ft three legged scafold =
around the pad. The cross members will serve as pick points, the kiln is =
counter-weighted. It is lined with 4 inches of fiber blanket, which I =
plan to coat with ITC.The blanket on the hot face has a continuous duty =
rating of 2700F. I really need all of the heigth for taller pieces so =
I'm building a fire box beneath.
My question is would it be better to have the burners oriented =
horizontally or vertically. Does it make a difference. If at all =
possible I would like to use natural aspiration rather than forced =
draft. Is it better to use several small burners rather than a couple =
big ones? Additionally, I'll be firing with propane, though it isn't =
that difficult for me to pipe in natural gas from the house.
The only reason I'm asking the question is because I noticed a kiln =
that had been built with the burners beneath the kiln rather than on the =
side as I was purusing Olson's book. I've used burners beneath quite =
successfully in the past on small raku kilns. My primary concern is =
efficiency and decent flame circulation. Thankyou
