lumpy zince oxide

Ilene, Kathy, and others talking about lumpy Zinc Oxide--

The other day some Claybud posted advice on using a studio-dedicated blen=
der
to smooth out zinc oxide. I tried it yesterday, and it worked beautifull=
y.
I measured out the dry ingredients, leaving the zinc to the last. After
measuring the zinc, I put it with a small amount of water in the blender.=
I
then added the blended zinc to the dry mixture. To be sure I captured a=
ll
the zinc, I added a little more water to the blender, sloshed it around, =
and
added it to the dry mix. Mixing and sieving were a snap after that.

Having succeeded with zinc oxide, I then turned to Wollastonite, which I
find very difficult to sieve. Same results.

I do find a few small lumps in my zinc oxide and deal with this by
crushing the measured amount with a rolling pin on a clean board and
then adding this to the glaze mix. It takes very little time.

I hate zinc oxide.

Next time I will definitely buy calcined--however, if you run the glaze
through a Talisman sieve enough times, you will eventually dissolve most =
of
the lumpy zinc. The little bit that's left behind isn't going to make tha=
t
much difference, IMO.
