grog for throwing clay

I'm tired of the silky smooth feel of my current high fired clay, so I've
decided to tell my clay supplier to add some grog to the next batch. My
clay doesn't have any problems - it's easy to throw and I don't have trouble
with cracking. The only reason I want to add grog or sand is to get some
texture.

I've never thrown grogged clay before. What I'm wondering is:

1. How coarse can grog be before it starts to hurt my hands when I throw?

2. How much grog can I add to the clay before it starts affecting plasticity
and makes it harder to throw?

Send it over here. I'm tired of my fingertips and fingernails being sanded
into oblivion by grog. I'm tired of repairing ruts dragged into the surface
of the clay when a trimming tool catches on hunks of grog.

Actually, no, I'm not tired of it, but I do feel frustrated by it sometimes.
I love a smooth clay body. To me, the feel of porcelain is downright sexy.
It is the closest thing I know to touching a woman. I pray that I never
tire of it.
