Have I been where you are, Aley.... drool and all!! Once I didn't even
recognize that the gray foam on my shino was a GOOD thing... thought it
was just my drool hittin' the bucket... Tony straightened me out on that
and every pot from those first dips into that bucket right smack into
the center of the foam turned out completely different from every other
one... kept every one for myself. (Forgive that last part ... doesn't
belong in this post, but I loved saying it ... true, too ... well, maybe
not the part about the drool.)

I'm still struggling with forms ALL THE TIME, being neither naturally
artistic nor mechanical... going against the grain all the way ... but
it is WORTH it. AND you are exactly where you need to be here on Clayart
with the most knowledgeable and sharing gurus in the WORLD. From my lips
to God's ear goes my incantation (does God ACCEPT incantations?) of ALL
the names of gurus who help us all every day ..... won't even try to
name them... used to be able to but the list grows constantly ... if
you've just begun, you can't realize the extent of the time and thought
that they give to us ... change our lives.... sometimes changes THEIR
lives.

We can be assisted mightily with glazes, firing, glazing techniques,
decorative suggestions etc.... but when it comes to forms, I found that
I had to develop a specific work ethic and STICK with it ... still
working on that part, too. Can't believe I'm saying this, but you can't
become adequate at throwing bowls without throwing tons of bowls, for
example... just working smarter won't get it ... gotta' just WORK. I
always believed in "don't work harder; work smarter" ... doesn't work
for many of us when it comes to forms.

To all newbies: listen to your betters (and in this case, they ARE) and
do as they suggest .....

In San Marcos where it rained like hell, canceling a Giant Pit Fire hrer at
Nottingam with Andy Clifs class from San Jacinto College. Darn, was looking
forward to the flames and party around the campfire.

Joyce this has got to be the loveliest email and so encouraging, thank you.
I did asked Toni from Africa who has been helping me quite a lot if she
thought Mel would marry me but sshe said Naw! he already was married . You
can imagine my disappointment when I realised I might have to try and grasp
all this technical.
stuff for myelf. I must say pottery is not for the faint of heart. :)
I think what astounds me more than anything is the dedication one needs to
truly an artist in this field
Aley :)
