Twenty years ago (Ceramics Monthly December l981 p.95) Gerald Rowen
published the following glaze which has been featured on Clayart many
times.

Base glaze cone 6 oxidation
Ferro frit 3134 20%
dolomite 20
spodumene 20
ball clay 20
flint 20

Of particular interest is his recommendation of the following direct
substitutions of other materials for the base glaze ingredients to create a
number of different glazes:

Ferro frit 3134 substitute Ferro 3124 or 5301,Pemco frit 54 or 25
,Hommel frit 259
colemanite,lithium carbonate,barium
carbonate or boric acid

for the dolomite " wollastonite,Cornwall stone,volcanic ash
or talc

for spodumene " Custer feldspar,Kona F 4feldspar or
nepheline syenite

The maturation temperature can also be modified by varying the frit
content:
for cone 4 23-28%
cone 5 20 to 25%
cone 7 0 to 10%
cone 8 0 to 5%

This should keep the glaze testers occupied for a while. Mia in sunny ABQ
